Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch Bourbon Review

Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch Bourbon, 55.1% abv (110.2 Proof), $65-70/bottle

Color: Deep Amber/Copper

Nose: Vanilla, Confectionary like a candy or fudge shop, sweet spices, and candied golden fruits (pineapple, apricots). Oak is present on the nose but not overpowering at all.

Palate: An eruption of sweet spices, black pepper, mint, rye grain, and alcohol heat. Then waves of red berry fruit, bitter orange rind and char. The sweetness is ever present throughout the sip with loads of burned caramel, vanilla, and rock candy. Not cloying in the least. The oak really asserts itself at the back of the palate.

Finish: Long and lingering with sweet spices, barrel char, and those confection sweet notes.

Overall: A superb bourbon that is well structured and balanced to the hilt. I love love love that it’s also at barrel proof which really helps to elevate those flavors. As with many Four Roses Bourbons, this one has those fantastic fruity and spicy flavors that is a hallmark for the distillery. While this sucker is expensive, I do highly recommend it. But I will say that this price underscores just what a fantastic value the Single Barrel is.

Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon Review

Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon, 50% abv (100 Proof), $32/bottle

Color: Deep Amber/Gold

Nose: Mint, anise, coconut, spiced honey, vanilla, chili, red berry fruits, cigar box, and cedar.

Palate: Nicely structured and almost tight (in a good way). Mint, clove, nutmeg, licorice, barrel char, and eucalyptus are all wrapped around a sweet core of crushed pineapple, red berries, honey, and vanilla fudge. This nice core of sweetness anchors the spice notes well. Elegant, full of finesse, and clearly well crafted.

Finish: Long and lingering mint, nutmeg, clove, fruitiness, honey, and dry oak. Very vibrant!

Overall:I have such admiration for Jim Rutledge and Four Roses. They make elegant, sophisticated bourbons that are so well balanced. The Single Barrel is one of my favorites out there. For the money it provides extremely good value. It’s a truly unique whiskey that begs to be drunk neat and savored slowly so you can appreciate all the nuances it brings to the party. Highly recommended!

Eagle Rare 10 Year Old Single Barrel Bourbon

Eagle Rare 10 Year Old Single Barrel Bourbon, 45% abv(90 Proof), $33-38/bottle

This one is a big bruiser of a bourbon opening up with a lot of barrel char, oak, vanilla, caramel, and some moderate spice on the nose. Not a whole lot of finesse here, and really gives you some “pop”. It drinks a good bit stronger than it’s 45% alcohol or 90 proof might indicate. The first sip (or chew) yields a lot of burned sugar & caramel, along with maple syrup, light mint, dry spice notes, and some resiny grip (tannin) and char. The mouth feel is thick and coats well leading to a long finish of vanilla, oaky dryness, and some light tingle on the tongue. Perhaps a bit “loose” around the edges but I respect it’s rough and tumble ways and recommend this bourbon.

Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel Bourbon

Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel Bourbon, 45% abv (90 proof), $28-35/bottle

Old familiar as I call it. Elmer T. Lee is quite possibly one of the most comforting Bourbons or Whiskey’s of any kind made today. The first whiff floods the nose with Maple, Caramel, gentle spice, and the wonderful bright notes of citrus and orange peel. The sip echoes the nose beautifully with caramel, maple, honey, vanilla, bitter orange, and light oak. The finish is moderately long with gentle spice coating the tongue. Just a brilliantly crafted bourbon of balance – deep and rich, yet so easily drinkable. A perfect bourbon for the novice and the connoisseur alike. And to think a Bourbon icon like Elmer T. Lee still selects the barrels to this day. Makes it all the more special. Highly recommended. Note: Bottled expressly for Brinkmann’s Wine and Spirits, Franklin, TN.

Willett Pot Still Reserve Single Barrel, (aka Buttered Popcorn) Bottle 145/Barrel 4799

Willett Pot Still Reserve Single Barrel, Bottle 145/Barrel 4799, 47% Abv/94 Proof, $38-45

This is a very interesting bourbon and somewhat unique. First sniff opens up tightly and takes time to evolve and deepen. It offers whiffs of vanilla, lightly toasted oak, and very faint spice notes. Some maple and burned sugar peeks through as well. All very restrained and light, this is not a “flooding” nose and requires a bit more patience to fully open up. On the sip this bourbon shines a lot more with flavors of maple and caramel, light spice, and a fairly intense blast of salted, buttered popcorn – a very nice arrangement. The finish is moderate in length with some oaky dryness, vanilla, and corn. Well done.

Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage 2000

Evan Williams Single Barrel, Vintage 2000, 43.3% (Abv)/86.6 Proof, $25-$30
Bottle #367
The nose opens up with Honey, Vanilla, some sweet spice (cinnamon, nutmeg) with some toasted oak and light barrel. First sip reinforces those flavors with ample measure. Honey immediately on the front of the tongue, prickly spice (mint/cinnamon), some citrusy/acidic notes, then toasted oak and vanilla on the back of the palette. This bourbon is medium bodied in the mouth with a spicy, minty finish that lingers moderately with some leftover sweetness and oak. A fantastic bourbon with layers of flavor. Extremely lively, balanced, and well crafted.
